Steps you should take after a car accident in Arizona

On Behalf of | Nov 10, 2022 | Car Accidents

Knowing what to do within the first few minutes is essential if you are involved in a car accident in Arizona. Remember to check yourself and your passengers for injuries, ensure your safety, call for help, exchange information with the other vehicle and retain copies of important documents for your insurance.

Check yourself and passengers for injuries

Some injuries may not be obvious but can cause difficulties for you later. If you think you or your passengers may be seriously injured, call 911 immediately. If you cannot move, call a bystander to help. It is a good idea always to seek medical attention if you are unsure whether you or your passengers were injured.

Make sure you and your passengers are safe

In most cases, it is best to stay with your vehicle after a car accident. If your car is still drivable, move it to the side of the roadway, into a parking lot or another area out of traffic. If you cannot drive it, turn your hazard lights on and go to a safe place away from the vehicle.

Call for help

If you haven’t already done so, call the police. To file an insurance claim, you will need a police accident report. The police will document the scene after a motor vehicle accident and can determine who is at fault.

Swap insurance information

Make sure to exchange insurance, vehicle information and contact information with any other drivers involved in the accident. The company will want all of this information when you file an insurance claim. Photographing the damage or speaking with potential witnesses may also be a good idea.

Get copies of important documents and contact your insurance company

You will want copies of paperwork regarding the accident, including the police reports and any receipts from towing vehicles. If you are able, you will want to contact your insurance agency at this time. Your insurance agency may also be able to recommend a certified auto mechanic to fix your car.
